Explanation of different forms of glaucoma
There are many different types of glaucoma. They are categorised according to the cause of the increased intraocular pressure. In most cases, there is an obstruction to the outflow of aqueous humour.
Open-angle glaucoma
Primary open-angle glaucoma:
The chamber angle is open, but the trabecular meshwork (drainage system) is not functioning properly.
There are two types:
With increased intraocular pressure:
Most common form, usually in people aged 40 and over. The pressure rises slowly and unnoticed, leading to irreversible damage.
With normal intraocular pressure(normal pressure glaucoma):
The eye pressure is normal, but the optic nerve is still damaged. Particularly common in Japan.
